After each cycle, the code is shifted and the comparator tries to adjust the voltage to match the voltage of the input signal. The ADC is said to have a 4-bit resolution, meaning that it can measure 4 levels of input voltage. Every step of the process is performed in 4 bit chunks. After 4 cycles, the voltage is adjusted to where it should be and the result is outputted. The entire process takes about 5 microseconds.
