Data Acquisition – Analog to Digital Converters (ADC)
Data acquisition is the process of measuring an analog signal and converting it into a digital format for further processing or analysis. Operating at the cutting edge of data acquisition technology is the Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) which is responsible for transforming analog signals into usable digital data. Application Field and Working Principle of the AD9251
The AD9251 is part of a family of high speed, low power, low cost, 12-bit, analog-to-digital data converters. Developed achieving a maximum sampling rate of 65MS/s, the AD9251 has been designed to work in a wide range of high resolution and high speed applications, including wireless communications. The AD9251 works by taking analog input signals and converting them into a digital output that can be read, processed and stored. This is achieved by using a delta-sigma conversion technique. The AD9251 uses a combination of oversampling, decimation, interpolation and noise-shaping filters to convert an analog signal into a high-resolution, low-distortion digital signal. This oversampling method is typically more efficient than other methods, as it allows for lower power consumption and improved performance.
The AD9251 also offers a variety of features which can be used for improved signal conditioning. These include Dual Conversion Rate Mode and Programmable Input Offset Error Correction. The AD9251 also employs power-saving techniques. It uses a "right shift" architecture which allows signals to be shifted to the right instead of the left, resulting in improved power-consumption. The AD9251 also features an on-chip MSP430 microcontroller which can be used to monitor and control the converter.
