PMIC–Supervisors encompasses a broad range of associated ICs that are essential to the reliable and safe operation and protection of electronic systems. The ADM8695ARWZ is a high performance bidirectional low-side electronic current sensing supervisor which is versatile and reliable enough to protect these systems from high current overload, short-circuit and/or over-temperature problems. This application note provides an overview of the ADM8695ARWZ application field and its working principle.
ADM8695ARWZ Application Field
The ADM8695ARWZ is a low-side current sensing supervisor and it is mainly used in battery cells, electric vehicle chargers, power supplies, and power management. This device can be used to protect Lithium Ion batteries from over-current and short-circuit conditions. It can also be used in power supplies to prevent over-current conditions and also in power management systems to control the current consumed from the AC/DC converter. ADM8695ARWZ can also be used as a protection device for automotive ECU, over-current and over-temperature protection for buck/boost application and for power management systems.
ADM8695ARWZ Working Principle
The ADM8695ARWZ is a bidirectional low-side current sensing supervisor. This device monitors current through a sense resistor and compares it with a programmable threshold voltage. An output pin is used to alert when an over-current or over-temperature condition is encountered. The ADM8695ARWZ has two supply inputs: a +VDD and an I/O voltage supply (VIO). When the voltage at the +VDD supply is applied to the sense resistor, a proportionate amount of current is generated. This current passes through the sense resistor and then through an internal Comparator. When this voltage exceeds the programmed trip point set by the VIN pin, an output pulse is activated at the output pin, OP.
The ADM8695ARWZ features an automatic shut-off protection feature which is activated when the current through the sense resistor exceeds a certain threshold for a specified time. The shut-off protection can be disabled using an internal bit in the configuration register. In case of an over-temperature condition, the ADM8695ARWZ will detect an over-temperature with an integrated analog comparator. The over-temperature protection can be disabled using an internal bit in the configuration register. In addition, the ADM8695ARWZ has an in-rush current limit feature which limits the current during the power-on stage and also reduces the start-up time.
Finally, the ADM8695ARWZ has a built-in diagnostic indicator which gives an indication of the temperature and current sense level. The diagnostics can be used to identify faults in the system. The diagnostics can be programmed using a built-in register. The ADM8695ARWZ provides diagnostic detection of over-current and over-temperature protection fault conditions.
