Working Principle

The ADP222ACPZ-3330-R7 is a high-performance, low quiescent current linear regulator based on the BiCMOS process. It works on the principle of a voltage divider technique, where a ratio of the output to input voltage is determined by the resistor divider ratio R3/R2. A 3.2V reference from the regulator is applied to non-inverting input of the error amplifier, which then compares it to the feedback voltage at the inverting input. The output of the error amplifier then controls the power transistor (Q1). When both the inputs are equal, the output voltage stays constant.

The current limit sense resistor (R1) allows the device to monitor the load current of the device. In case of a short circuit, the current sensed by R1 is greater than the design current limit, resulting in the current limit circuitry over-riding the voltage control loop. When the current sense voltage exceeds a certain threshold the power transistor (Q1) is turned off, protecting both the load and the regulator from dangerous current overloads.

The thermal shutdown circuit senses the die temperature of the regulator, turning off the power transistor (Q1) if it exceeds a certain threshold. This thermal protection feature ensures that the power transistor does not overheat due to high input voltage or high load conditions.
