Data Acquisition - Analog to Digital Converters (ADC) may help to bridge the gap between physical and digital electronics. An ADC can measure an analog signal and convert it into a digital number. One example of such a device is ADS5272IPFP. It is an 8-bit multi-channel analog-to-digital converter featuring 8 separate analog inputs with 8 independent 1MHz bandwidth sample-and-hold channels and 8 output pins. This device can provide simultaneous sampling of all 8 channels for data acquisition applications in industrial, medical, and instrumentation devices.
The ADS5272IPFP can provide a wide range of measurement range, programmable gain and offset calibration. The architecture allows, among others, sampling rate up to 1MSPS, and the conversion time including the internal sample-and-hold and settling phases is 6.7μs. The accuracy is ±2LSB with 16 times over sampling. It is also capable of auto power management and has programmable shutdown and power-on policies.
The ADS5272IPFP uses a successive-approximation architecture to convert analog input signals into 8-bit digital codes. The input signals are provided either by a voltage reference source (VREF), or an internal reference was used from VDD/2. The signals are conditioned with a sample and hold circuit. In the successive approximation register (SAR), the input voltage is compared with an on-chip reference voltage generated by the reference DAC. The comparison result is used to adjust the integral capacitor until the input voltage matches the reference voltage. Once the comparison is successful, the result is obtained in eight conversion cycles and is available on the output pins.
The ADS5272IPFP is designed to operate from a single 2.5-3.3V supply with a 45mV nominal voltage reference. It is housed in a small 4mmx4mm QFN package and is suitable for medical, industrial and instrumentation applications. In order to increase the accuracy, it has a digital offset and gain adjust feature which enables users to optimize performance. The device has a serial data interface for communication with the system for power calibration, conversion configuration and result readback. It also contains a programmable shutdown and power-on policy.
