The ADS8317IDRBT is a high performance, low power 12-bit, successive-approximation analog-to-digital converter (ADC) from Texas Instruments. It is specifically designed for automotive applications and is capable of operating from a supply voltage of 3.0V to 5.5V. The ADC is capable of sampling input signals up to a maximum clock frequency of 720MHz while exhibiting no cycle-to-cycle jitter. The ADC also offers excellent differential linearity performance, making it suitable for automotive applications where high accuracy is required.The ADC provides a wide range of features and applications, including industrial, automotive, and power monitoring. It provides a low power, high resolution conversion solution enabling accurate and fast measurements of analog signals. The device is ideal for the measurement of rotational speed, DC and AC voltage levels, temperature, differential pressure, and torque. Additionally, the ADS8317IDRBT is capable of converting temperature signals from various transducers including thermocouples and thermistors.The ADS8317IDRBT ADC uses a successive-approximation register (SAR) architecture, which consists of a 12-bit 2’s complement result register that holds the digital output from the analog to digital conversion. The SAR is fed by an analog input that is sampled by the ADC at each clock cycle. The analog readout is provided by an internal track-and-hold (T&H) circuit and is compared to a reference voltage by the internal comparator.The ADC operates in one of three modes: single-shot, continuous single-sweep, and continuous dual-sweep. In single-shot mode, the ADC performs a single conversion when the start command is asserted and returns the digital result. In continuous single-sweep mode, the ADC performs a continuous number of conversions and returns the digital results when the stop command is asserted. In continuous dual-sweep mode, the ADC performs a continuous number of back-to-back conversions and returns the digital results after both single sweeps are completed.In addition to its analog-to-digital functionality, the ADS8317IDRBT also offers two integrated digital filters for noise suppression. These integrated filtering solutions are pulse averaging and decimation filter. The pulse averaging filter helps reduce the effect of random noise by averaging the ADC\'s output in a certain number of clock cycles. The decimation filter helps reduce the frequency of spurious frequencies from the ADC\'s output.The ADS8317IDRBT ADC performs the analog-to-digital conversion in two conversion cycles. In the first cycle, the analog signal is sampled by the ADC. In the second cycle, the ADC performs a 10-bit successive-approximation register comparison of the analog input and first reference voltage samples. The sampled result is then latched and the second 10-bit SAR comparison is done. The ADC holds the converted digital output until the start of the next conversion.The ADS8317IDRBT is designed to meet the requirements of demanding automotive applications. It offers excellent resolution, speed and low power consumption in a small package. The device features an integrated voltage reference, reference buffer and power-on Reset circuitry. The integrated voltage reference provides low-drift, ultra-low-noise performance in a wide supply voltage range. In addition, the integrated power-on reset circuitry enables the ADC to reset itself on a power glitch or during a power-down event. The device also includes a set of diagnostic functions such as power-on reset and ADC overload detection. The device is also equipped with several self-test modes that allow the user to verify the device’s performance on their particular application. Furthermore, the ADS8317IDRBT includes integrated safety features to prevent electrical overstress and power supply issues.
