Analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are utilized to convert analog signals into discrete digital values which can be processed by electronic devices. The ADC can be set up to work in different states, depending on the signal type it is measuring. In signal capture mode, each successive sample is grabbed, digitized and released as continuous data for further processing. Conversion is initiated by the rising edge of a START signal or by the resetting of the conversion register. The second state is known as the single-shot mode. Here, the ADC captures a single sample, which is then digitally processed by the SAR and then outputted as digital data.

The ADS820UG4 ADC offers an additional option of power down mode. This allows the ADC to be powered down during periods when it is not being used, reducing its overall power consumption. The power DOWN mode enables the ADC to still accept external signals with reduced current consumption.
