Working Principle

The device works on the principle of ‘avalanche breakdown’. When the voltage across the device exceeds a certain threshold, the electrons are forced to flow through a narrow gap between N-type and P-type regions. This creates a heavily doped layer between the junction points, which increases the flow of current further.

The device is made up of two sections; an N-type region and a P-type region. The P-type region contains a number of thin layers of N-type material with a higher doping level compared to the N-type region. This creates an increased concentration of free electrons at the PN junction, forming an ‘avalanche breakdown’.
