AP1509-33SG-13 is a DC-DC Switching Regulator from PMIC - Voltage Regulators family which offers high efficiency, low noise and fast transient response.
The AP1509-33SG-13 is a monolithic integrated Voltage regulator, which includes a PWM current mode controller, an avalanche rated240V power MOSFET, an adjustable voltage reference, and various operational and protection blocks.
The AP1509-33SG-13 frequency oscillator controls the internal MOSFET switch can be operated from a 10 MHz external clock source with a nominal duty cycle at 50%. Device power dissipation is low. Closed loop operation provides a programmable output voltage and temperature foldback to protect against output overloads and temperature fluctuations.
The AP1509-33SG-13 works by firstly establishing the reference voltage of the circuit that is necessary to achieve the output voltage. this reference voltage is synchronised with the PWM (pulse width modulated) signal and the gate of the power MOSFET is turned on and off at the same rate at which the reference voltage transitions.
Within the circuit, the voltage regulation loop monitors the output voltage and using an error amplifier, it adjusts the duty cycle of the PWM signal to maintain the set output voltage. The time the MOSFET is turned on will determine the output voltage.
The reference voltage is established by the internal current source which together with the external sensing, define the output voltage. This current is sourced through the internal resistive network from the supply, hence, the output voltage is valid only if the input voltage is higher than the output voltage by several volts.
One benefit of the AP1509-33SG-13 is that it features the over current protection (OCP) circuit, which prevents the output current from exceeding the OCP limit, when the load is below a certain threshold this current value is adjustable through the external resistor. That OCP threshold can be set to any value. This feature protects the circuit from over current conditions and increases the life of the system.
pulse-by-pulse current limit, where a peak current is defined by an external resistor, is also included on this device. If the output current exceeds the defined peak current, the MOSFET will be turned off and the output current will remain at that peak current value. This will allow for a smooth start-up for the circuit, as well as limiting the peak current at the output, preventing damage to the system.
Additional features offered by AP1509-33SG-13 include soft start, enable pin, over temperature protection, and output enable latch protection. The enable pin allows the component to switch from ON to Sleep mode with a low current consumption.
The AP1509-33SG-13 is suitable for use in a wide range of applications including PC/Notebook power supplies, Battery powered systems, DC-DC converters, Automotive applications, LED lighting, and Telecom systems.
