AP34063S8G-13 Working Principle

AP34063S8G-13 integrates two power MOSFETs, one for the PWM switching, and the other for current limit and short-circuit protection. All switches are internally controlled and synchronized. The current limit threshold can be programmed via the external resistor to suit the system, while the external logic control pin is used to turn off the device. The device requires a minimum of frequency and gain tuning to ensure desired output voltage regulation.

The switching frequency is preset at a nominal value of 500 kHz, which allows the package and magnetics size optimization. The operating frequency can be changed through an external resistor, thus providing different input and output voltage ratios for improved efficiency.

The current limit and the auto-retry (AR) function are essential to power cycle the device in case of a severe overload, or a short-circuit condition on the output. The device supports a nominal current limit threshold of 2.5 A, which can be reduced by means of an external resistor. The auto-retry (AR) function prevents the device from immediately latching-off during a short overload. If an overload occurs, the PWM decreases the duty cycle gradually to a safe level, thus allows it to restart after a certain time.

The output voltage can be programmed using an external single resistor. The voltage can be set anywhere between 1.2 V and the feedback voltage (1.245V). The start-up is controlled by an internal soft-start circuitry. The soft-start prevents the output from impulsively rising from the power-up or from the auto-retry reset conditions.
