Aluminum-Polymer Capacitors (APSC) are an emerging class of low-profile, high-energy density, hermetic and non-hermetic, electrolytic capacitors. They are ideal for applications where the space available for a traditional capacitor is limited or for applications where higher capacitance than a standard aluminum electrolytic capacitor is required. The APC2R5ELL821MH08J is a good example of an aluminum-polymer capacitor.

The APC2R5ELL821MH08J is specifically designed for automotive, industrial and military applications. It offers high ripple current and high-voltage capabilities up to 265V and a ripple current rating of 821mA at 100kHz over a wide temperature range of -40°C to +105°C. The capacitor exhibits low ESR (equivalent series resistance) and low inductance values, making it ideal for power conversion, power switching, and power conditioning applications. It has a highly stable electrical behavior and a wide capacitance range of 10μF to 820μF.

The working principle of an aluminum-polymer capacitor is based on the Faraday law of induction. Electrons in the aluminum are attracted to a positively charged electrolyte, forming a double-layer capacitor. As voltage is applied across the device, current flows through the anode (positive) and cathode (negative) terminals, creating a charge on each of the capacitor layers. The electrons in the aluminum platting are attracted to the positive ions in the electrolyte, forming an electrical field across the capacitor’s plates. As the voltage increases, more charge is created on each layer, increasing the capacitance. The electrical field continuous to increase until the capacitor reaches its maximum allowable voltage rating.

The APC2R5ELL821MH08J uses a positive double layer aluminum foil and a polymer electrolyte to create its high capacitance. This technology offers many advantages over the standard aluminum electrolytic capacitors including a wide operating temperature range, low ESR and LE (low equivalent inductance) values and high-temperature operation up to 125°C. It also has an extremely low DF (dissipation factor) of less than 5% over its entire operational temperature range.
