PMIC, or Power Management Integrated Circuits, are widely used in electronic systems in order to improve their efficiency, reliability and safety. Supervisors are a specific category of PMICs which are used to monitor the power state of electronic systems and control those systems in order to protect them from overheating or other damages. The chip works to monitor the system supply voltage and the current consumption of the system. It continuously tracks the system voltage and sets the active outputs according to programmed thresholds. In case of under-voltage and over-voltage faults, the STR(Over Voltage) and SGF(Under Voltage) pins are activated as soon as the power rail drops below or rises above the programmed threshold. In this way, the chip is able to provide an early warning or indicate an imminent system failure.

The AS1917R-T also offers thermal protection. It monitors the temperature of the device and activates the Over Temperature Fault pin(OTF) if it exceeds a threshold value that is determined by an external resistor. The temperature can also be monitored externally by connecting a temperature sensor to the chip. In this way, the chip can alert the surrounding environment to rapidly changing temperatures.

The chip also features a programmable current-sense circuit, which provides the capability to monitor the current consumption of the system and set a fault threshold if it exceeds a pre-programmed value. This feature can be used to protect the system from over-current faults such as short circuits, overloads, current-induced switch failures and other faults.
