The traditional linear comparator is called a “bang-bang” comparator, which refers to its two output states ( high and low ) when an input voltage is greater than or less than the reference. The AS1971 is a high performance, low power linear comparator designed for use in various applications. The device provides extended dynamic range, fast turn-on time, and high precision. The comparator is ideal for use in power supply related applications, such as overvoltage and undervoltage alarms, overcurrent shutoff, and peak current clamp. It can also be used as an analog switch for noise suppression, as well as for switching, scanning, and data conversion.The AS1971 is designed to operate in a wide range of supply voltage (2.7V to 36V) and temperatures (-40°C to +85°C). The device features an externally-pin adjustable hysteresis of 0.1V to 2.75V to help eliminate false switching due to system noise, and programmable turn-on and turn-off delays to optimize system response time. The device has pushpull output drivers and an inverted output option to provide compatibility with a variety of logic families.The AS1971\'s primary function is to monitor two voltages inputs, Vin and Vref. Low and high threshold limits are programmable with external resistors on the hysteresis pin. The device produces a high ( sinking ) output when the Vin is greater than Vref (high threshold). The output goes low ( sourcing ) when Vin is less than Vref (low threshold). The comparator has two operating modes: fast and low power. The fast mode is selected by turning on the fast mode pullup resistor on the RS pin. In this mode, the output response time is faster, but the power consumption is higher. The low power mode is selected by turning off the fast mode pullup resistor on the RS pin. In this mode, the output response time is slower, but the power consumption is lower.
