The AS3824E-ZQFT is an LED driver by ams AG, specifically designed for driving multiple white LEDs with high efficiency. This PMIC- LED driver is designed to drive up to 8 LEDs in series and boost their output voltage. It is apt for LED-backlighting applications and LED-based indicator and lighting solutions as well. AS3824E-ZQFT addresses space-restricted designs with features such as a programmable maximum LED current, individual LED short circuit protection, over-temperature protection, and more. It also offers cost-effective tight control over maximum average LED current.

Working Principle

AS3824E-ZQFT uses Analogue and Digital Frequency Control to control the Primary Side current. A programming non-volatile memory (EEPROM) allows the user to pre-program the current level before the device is put into operation. The dynamometer used in this device reduces power consumption, to achieve higher system efficiency. AS3824E-ZQFT has precision current regulation with a ~1% accuracy over-temperature and line-voltage variations. It provides up to 0.3A current per LED and supports up to 24V dc input voltage.

AS3824E-ZQFT operates in a controller area network (CAN) communication interface. The device communicates with the main microcontroller. CAN communication gives extra flexibility and helps to monitor not just the LED but also the input and output voltages, output currents and the temperature. LED dimming for different user applications is possible due to the necessity for pull-up resistors and external voltage controlling the LED current.

The device also provides a thermal control loop (TCL) to protect the LEDs from getting hot. The TCL adjusts the average LED current limit to reduce the power dissipation according to the device temperature. The user can also tune and protect the minimum off-time of the secondary side path, which prevents decreased efficiency when the PWM duty cycle is close to 0%.

This LED driver also features a smart power-saving algorithm that automatically permits external input power adapter to turn off when LED current is low. Analogue and Digital Frequency Control makes AS3824E-ZQFT compatible with ASIC controllers, thereby adding more flexibility to the system.
