TVS devices provide a clamping action, limiting the voltage across the protected component to a safe level.The B1160CCRP is a mixed technology unidirectional TVS diode designed by Diodes Incorporated. This device is designed for use in transient voltage suppression applications in automotive, industrial, computer, telecommunications, consumer and other electronic systems. The B1160CCRP is encapsulated and hermetically sealed in an industry standard SOT-143 package.The B1160CCRP is designed to protect sensitive components against damage from voltage transients caused by lightning, load dump, switching noise, and ESD. It can also be used to protect inductive loads from currents generated by high-speed switching applications. The device is a bidirectional transient voltage suppressor with an integrated voltage regulator. Its clamping voltage is optimized for applications that require a combination of ESD protection up to 40kV contact/discharge, and a clean clamping voltage for lightening and switching transients.The B1160CCRP consists of two separate elements: a zener diode and a silicon avalanche device connected in series. The zener diode provides voltage regulation and the avalanche diode provides the clamping action. The zener diode maintains the output voltage at the regulated level of 7.5V by utilizing its characteristic breakdown voltage. When a transient voltage spike above the zener diode’s breakdown voltage occurs, the zener diode starts to conduct and the current is limited by the integrated avalanche device. The avalanche device clamps the voltage to its breakdown voltage, thus limiting the voltage surge to a safe value.This device has an operating temperature range of -40°C to 85°C. It can withstand peak repetitive reverse or forward surge currents up to 1A for periods of 10ms. The breakover voltage of the zener diode is rated at 6.5V and the avalanche diode has a breakdown voltage of 41V. The maximum clamping voltage is 32V. The maximum clamping current is 2.5A and the maximum peak pulse power dissipation is 225W.The B1160CCRP is suitable for applications requiring protection from load dump, lightning, and transient voltage spikes on lines feeding inductive loads. It is ideal for automotive and industrial equipment, computers and related peripherals, telecommunications systems, consumer appliance, and many other electronic systems.
