The term TVS (transient voltage suppressor) always refers to a series of specialized components developed for protection against sudden surge or spike in voltage, no matter in applications of mixed technology, it still has its advantages. Here I would like to focus on discussing the application field and working principle of B1161UCLTP – a series of TVS from Littelfuse. In detail, this component is a unidirectional TVS, suitable to protect against ESD and surge pulses. As can be seen from its datasheet, this device is offered in an SMB-type package with a peak pulse power rating up to 650W. Its applications range from consumer electronics to the areas requiring high voltage protection, such as automotive, industrial and commercial applications. In automotive use, this device provides a low thermal resistance and high peak pulse power rating for demanding automotive applications. It is designed for environment with high operating temperatures (up to 150℃), also, it is AEC-Q101 qualified so it meets the stringent requirements of the automotive industry.In industrial and commercial applications, this device is also popularly used in the areas requiring a high transient protection as it supports an IEC 61000-4-2 (ESD) 15kv rating and an IEC 61000-4-5 (surge) 12A rating. It can also be used in lighting, muscle-stimulators, smart meters and home appliances, where a strong transient protection is needed. In terms of working principle, when a surge pulse appears, the components will convert the transient of high energy to a form of heat energy and release it to the environment to disperse, meanwhile, the output voltage will be clamped to a defined safe level. To make this possible, the device must have a very tough structure which is composed of three key components: the clamping element, the protection diode and a low resistance current path. The clamping element comes into action when the voltage reaches a certain level, it acts as a barrier that blocks the excessive current and thus protect other more vulnerable components like microprocessors from damage. The protection diode is conductive when the reverse voltage reaches a certain threshold, such as 12V, the diode will be activated and it will provide a path for the current generated by the surge to flow through thus dispersing the energy before it induces any damages. Last but not least, it is the low resistance current path that connects the two external terminals and will take the current away from other components and eliminates the interference in the system.In conclusion, B1161UCLTP is a unidirectional TVS designed to protect against ESD and surge pulses. It is mainly used in the automotive, industrial and commercial applications and it provides a reliable protection. Its working principle involves three components: the clamping element, the protection diode and the current path, all of which makes sure that the high surge energies will be handled safely.
