Working Principle of B3104UARP

The B3104UARP is a mixed technology device that operates mainly by detecting transient overvoltages and switching on a fast protective action to limit the amount of current that can flow into the protected circuit. Specifically, it uses surface mount multilayer varistors for protection. When an overvoltage event occurs, the multilayer varistors, along with a series of protection elements, will activate and limit the amount of current that can enter the protected circuit. varistors reduce the harmful voltage spikes driven by the overvoltage events by dissipating the energy across an internal junction. This is done by increasing their resistance when a high voltage is present, thus preventing a massive current surge from entering the circuit and causing damage. After the surge is absorbed the resistance of the varistors drops back to the original value.The B3104UARP provides overvoltage protection by the means of a series of elements, including:1. An overflow diode: this diode redirects current away from the protected circuit, thus protecting it from overvoltage events. 2. A series resistor: this component limits the amount of current that can pass through the device.3. A series Zener diode: this component protects the device from damage in case the voltage exceeds the operating parameters.4. A Thermal Management Circuit: this component prevents the device from becoming too hot due to excessive current. 5. An Electrostatic Discharge circuit: this component diverts electrostatic discharge away from the protected circuit. Additionally, the B3104UARP uses a surge limiting resistance, a temperature compensation resistor, and an oxide layer to provide excellent overvoltage protection.
