Aluminum electrolytic capacitors (also known as aluminum electrolytic) are capacitors with a non-solid electrolyte, constructed of an anode aluminum foil, and a cathode of a metal oxide film (such as tantalum oxide or manganese oxide). They are available in both polaralized and non-polaralized form. Some capacitors are also known as electrolytic capacitors, as their terminals are made of metals such as copper or brass that when immersed in an electrolyte solution effect a chemical reaction.

Working Principle

The main principle how an aluminum electrolytic capacitor works is quite simple – it uses an insulating oxide layer on the aluminum anode to store electrical energy. This oxide layer works as dielectric material, thus allowing electrical energy to be stored within the capacitor. During charging, an electric field is created between the anode and cathode, which attracts electrons and increases the charge of the capacitor.

When the capacitor is discharged, an electric current will flow between the anode and the cathode. Charge accumulates at the oxide layer at the anode and causes ions to move through the electrolyte, allowing current to flow between the anode and the cathode. When the electric field created by this reaction is small enough, the capacitor will be discharged and can be charged again with a new electric field.
