Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are passive electronic components that are constructed with an anode made of aluminum, a cathode of aluminum foil, and the electrolyte of a gel or liquid. An electric field is created between the two terminal points of the capacitor, the anode and the cathode. This electric field and the electrolyte between these terminals form the basis of the electrical energy storage, the capacitance. When a voltage is applied, the charge carriers in the electrolyte migrate towards the opposite polarity, thus creating a voltage potential. This transforms the electric field of the capacitor into electrostatic energy, which is then stored within the capacitor.To achieve optimum performance, aluminum electrolytic capacitors should be used carefully. Excessive voltage may result in breakdown while reverse voltage may lead to electrolyte leaking and a decrease in capacitance.
