Aluminum electrolytic capacitors consist of two aluminum-alloy foils, placed parallel to each other and separated by a layer of paper saturated with a conductive electrolyte. One of the aluminum foils is called the anode and the other is called the cathode. The metal layer further acts as a shield against the ingress of the electrolyte. The anode and cathode foils are electrically connected to the aluminum foil through an insulated anode and cathode plates. This connection puts the aluminum foils in electrical contact with each other through a conductive electrolyte.
