The oxide layer is the dielectric and has a large dielectric constant. The cathode is the negative plate and is made of aluminum foil coated with a layer of activated carbon. The electrolyte is an electrically conductive medium between the two plates.When a voltage is applied across the plates, a current will flow through the electrolyte and the electrolyte will react with the cathode. This reaction will cause the aluminum oxide layer on the anode to grow thicker. This is known as an “electrolytic reaction” and will increase the capacitance of the capacitor.
