Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are the most popular type of capacitor used in electronic circuits. The device employs an electrolyte, usually a moistened carbide or sulfate of sodium, which effectuate a chemical reaction between an anode and a cathode between which the electrical charge is stored and then discharged. They are small and relatively lightweight, and their construction is extremely simple compared to other capacitor types. Working Principle

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors have two electrodes. An anode made of aluminum foil and an electrolyte coated cathode. The anode and the electrolyte form the core of the capacitor and determine its electrical properties. The anode is a thin piece of aluminum foil that is etched to form a large number of very small perforations which act as channels for the electrolyte to pass through. The electrolyte, usually an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide, is applied to the capillaries and creates a very thin layer of insulation between the anode and the cathode.

When the capacitor is placed in a circuit, an electric current passes through the anode, through the electrolyte, and returns through the cathode. The electric current causes a reaction in the electrolyte which forms an electrostatic field that stores electrical energy. The strength of this electrostatic field is proportional to the current through the capacitor, and further, this stored energy will be released when the circuit is cut off, allowing an electric current to flow through the capacitor. The stored energy is in turn determined by the capacitance of the device.
