An electrolyte is typically a solution of ethylene glycol or propylene glycol with a small amount of boric acid in water. A cathode and anode are coated onto the aluminum foil. The anode is typically composed of aluminum foil combined with a coating that catalyzes the formation of aluminum oxide during the manufacturing process. The aluminum electrolytic capacitor is designed to provide very high capacitance values. It is a type of capacitor that utilizes the difference in electrical potential between two separate layers of aluminum oxide. The high electrical potential causes electrons to travel between the anode and the cathode, thus creating an electric field and resulting in the storage of charge.
