The BA9706K is a DC-DC switching mode power supply controller. It controls of the switching FET that can prevent the large inrush current of the secondary output at the initial start-up, and it is useful in order to reduce the power loss at operation and to perform the soft starting of motors. It is composed of two dedicated ICs, one dedicated to the control of switching FET and the other to the feedback circuit and control logic circuit, and they are combined into one 24-pin. Although TL594 or UC3842 can be used as the peripheral circuits, precision components are necessary in order to improve the stability of the primary shut-down operation and the soft start operation. In this situation, the 24-pin shown in Fig. 1 and the BA9706K has clear advantages over the other DC-DC controllers on the market.
The BA9706K can detect the over voltage (OV) of the secondary output, take the control signal to shut-down the switching FET, and can judge the OV signal is not a noise one at the same time. This achieves the prevention of the overvoltage of the secondary output and the enhanced stability of the system. Furthermore, the adjustment of the rise time of the switching FET is easily done with the external components, and this feature is extremely useful to eliminate the ringing caused by the improper value setting of the external components.
The voltage regulation circuit of the BA9706K comprises two operational amplifiers. One operational amplifier is used in the feedback loop to detect and adjust the output voltage, and another one is used in the soft start/stop circuit to make the soft starting/stopping of the output voltage possible. The former amplifies the output voltage and compares it to the reference voltage. This reference voltage can be adjusted with a single external resistor, making the standard resistive voltage dividers redundant. Moreover, the rise time of the output voltage can be adjusted with the hysteresis feedback of the other operational amplifier.
The BA9706K has several operating modes, including step-up, step-down, and current limit modes. In the step-up mode, the secondary output voltage is higher than the input voltage, and the current rating can reach up to 2A. In the step-down mode, the secondary output voltage is lower than the input voltage. This mode allows the output voltage to reach up to 1V. In the current limit mode, the current limit threshold is adjustable depending on the external components. This is useful to prevent short circuit damage.
