A full-wave rectifier with a single phase is one of a handful of important components in the expansive field of control systems. Bipolar AC (alternating current) supply voltage is converted to direct current (DC) with the help of a diode rectifier bridge. The rectification bridge commonly referred to as the “BAS85”, is a 4-diode unit with an anode, a cathode and the two connecting leads.In a rectifying circuit, the anode (positive lead) attaches to the positive DC bus, while the cathode (negative lead) attaches to the negative DC bus. In the BAS85, the diodes are arranged as two parallel arms of two diodes each with the anode of one diode in the positive arm connected to the anode of the other diode in the negative arm. This configuration enables the rectification of the AC voltage wherein the current alternately flows through each of the diode branches.The most common application of BAS85 is in the component of a power supply unit. The alternating current enters the input of the unit and the BAS85 rectifier bridge rectifies it to direct current. This rectified current is then depressed using a capacitor and passed through the regulator circuit, resulting in a stabilized DC output. It is also used in welding and industrial electronics applications.In a BAS85 bridge, each of the four independent diodes conducts current in only one direction. This ensures that the output current is in the proper polarity irrespective of the polarity of the voltage applied to the component. The four diodes are connected in two symmetrical loops to allow for the two directions of AC input current.When an alternating current is passed through the component, the two diodes on the positive arm of the bridge will conduct current from the anode to the cathode only, while the two diodes in the negative arm of the bridge will conduct current from the cathode to the anode only, thus allowing only the positive pulses in the AC input wave to pass through to the output.When the AC waveform goes through the negative to positive transition, only the negative diodes will conduct, but due to the polarity, the voltage out of the component is not reversed but stays in the same direction. This ensures that the output is a DC voltage waveform rather than an AC.The advantages of a BAS85 bridge are that it compares favourably to other traditional rectification methods such as half-wave rectification and single-phase full-wave rectification in terms of power consumption and efficiency. By using the symmetrical dual-loop topology, the efficiency of the rectification process is much higher when compared to traditional techniques. The lack of reversing and the higher efficiency in the BAS85 bridge also results in the reduction of the “ripple”, which is a version of noise in the output waveform.The BAS85 bridge, like other rectifiers, is a key component in power management systems. It is used in a variety of applications such as motor controls and power supplies where it can provide a reliable DC output with low power consumption. Compared to the traditional power rectification methods, the BAS85 bridge is a more efficient and cost-effective choice.
