A supervisor circuit is a multifunction device which provides signalling, monitoring and protection functions to a system. The most common roles are focused on power supply regulation, on-off control and reset, usually through the use of external devices such as potentiometers, resistors and fuses. The BD48K30G-TL supervisor circuit is part of a range of multi-functional supervisory circuits from Texas Instruments.

The BD48K30G-TL integrated circuit offers a wide range of protection and control capabilities, including monitoring a system\'s supply voltage, monitoring for over-voltage and over-current conditions, latch-off mode for over-voltage and over-current conditions and a general-purpose reset for any supply condition not otherwise monitored by the chip.

The BD48K30G-TL is a 5V/3V/1.8V logic family voltage supervisor built on a 0.35 micron CMOS technology. The built-in voltage monitor consists of a voltage detector, a reference generator, and a resistor network. When the monitored supply voltage drops below the predetermined minimum threshold, the output is forced to toggle the setpoint value, the reset pin is pulsed low and the voltage supervisor is essentially reset and held low until the monitored supply voltage is satisfied. The supervisory circuit provides three logic control levels for the reset pin – reset, activate, and turn off. This allows the reset pin not only to be used as a system reset but also to activate or deactivate low power devices.

The BD48K30G-TL has an integrated ±3% accuracy reference generator whose output can be used to set the voltage monitor’s trip point. The reference voltage is also connected to an input pin to enable external voltage scaling off a regulated power supply to obtain higher accuracy. This multiple supply architecture allows for better performance in low voltage systems. The unique architecture ensures the minimum trip parameters, such as trip voltage and minimum on time, are independent of the supply voltage.
