Humidity and moisture sensors are indispensable in many industrial applications. The sensing of relative humidity and temperature is essential in a wide range of environments such as medical and laboratory applications. The BME280 is a high-precision, low-power digitally-corrected membrane atmospheric pressure pressure, humidity and temperature sensor module. It is developed by Bosch Sensortec.

The Bosch BME280 consists of a piezo-resistive pressure sensing element (P), a Temperature/humidity sensing element (H), and an integrated circuit (IC). The IC contains an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for the sensor signals. It also contains logic and an analog reference voltage to adjust the nee of the P and H elements.

The BME280 operates on a low-power SPI interface that combines the sensing elements and a 3.3V LDO voltage regulator. It is designed for integration into a mobile or portable application, where low energy cost and integrated sensing element are essential. The module includes an external 32 KHz oscillator, allowing very low power consumption, even during sleep mode.

The sensing elements of BME280 include a P element for barometric pressure, an H element for relative humidity and an NTC temperature element. The P element detects ambient atmospheric pressure and the H element detects the relative humidity in the air. The NTC element accurately measures the temperature. All three elements are integrated into a single chip.

The BME280 module utilizes the Bosch Digital Humidity Sensor (HD) which is a patented technique that allows very low power consumption while providing a resolution and accuracy superior to other humidity sensors. It is a capacitive type of sensor and utilizes a thin-coated polyimide film as the sensing element.

The BME280 operates on a low-power “Current-Mode” architecture. This architecture is based on the principle of measuring the difference between two capacitors in order to detect humidity. The sensor uses the capacitive humidity sensing element as one of the capacitors and the air as the other. The humidity sensor measures this capacitance difference and uses it to calculate the relative humidity of the air.

The BME280 also offers a low power consumption self-calibration feature. The self-calibration process automatically adjusts the humidity and temperature measurement characteristics of the humidity sensor with parameters that are specific to the environment in which it is being used. This ensures that the sensor maintains its accuracy even after years of use.

The BME280 can be used in a wide range of applications including medical, industrial, environmental, and laboratory purposes. It is ideal for use in areas where precise humidity and temperature data is needed such as industrial process control, weather monitoring, in-building environmental feedback systems, and air conditioning.
