BQ24083EVM is an advanced evaluation platform that consists of a BQ24083EVM-main Board and multiple daughter boards. This platform is designed to evaluate and demonstrate the features of BQ24083 and BQ24084 Li-ion charger ICs for single-cell Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) battery, temperature supervisory network, system load and USB port power supply applications. It supports up to 4 cells with external current sense resistor without the need of inductive boost and current sense amplifier.

BQ24083EVM has two parts, namely the main board and the daughter board. The main board is built using the Texas Instruments BQ24083 Li-ion charger IC. This board includes a user adjustable power adapter, a Li-ion charger and a system load for testing and debugging. The main cost element of the board is the BQ24083EVM-main board which contains the integrated circuit, connectors, jumpers, buttons, LEDs, as well as necessary resistors and capacitors, all clearly marked and labeled. This board is used for connecting the BQ24083EVM-daughter board in order to provide the user interface.

The daughter board allows a user to control the BQ24083EVM-main board. It has several push buttons that can be used to control different features such as the current limit, threshold voltages, charge/discharge status, as well as the thermal protection status. Additionally, the board features an SMBus communication interface for remote control.

BQ24083EVM operates in two primary modes – a Standby Mode and a Fault Mode. A logic level high on the SDA and SCL pins in the standby mode is responsible for generating the initiating voltage of the charging circuit. When the charger is in the Fault Mode, the output current is forced to zero.
