:PMIC - Battery Management
The BQ24311DSGR (herein referred to as the ‘controller’) is an embedded device intended for automotive battery management systems. It is a “Charge and System Power” integrated circuit desgined under the Texas Instruments SmartCOT™ family of products. It is specifically designed to be used in 12V lead-acid applications, and is suitable for a wide range of vehicles & equipment, such as locomotives, off-highway vehicles, buses, and so on.
The device integrates charge and system power control, and provides battery protection from overcharging, undercharging and overloading. The controller is based on efficient synchronous PWM buck control, allowing it to achieve a wide range of system power requirements. This integrated circuit is highly efficient, thanks to the high power synchronous Topology with body diodes that switch the high current of up to 25 A.
The BQ24311DSGR device provides an ultra low standby current through its sleep feature. SmartCOT™ technology helps in the implementation of a robust battery management system, and therefore improves overall system runtime and increases system battery life. The BQ24311DSGR also supports modeling and monitoring algorithms in order to accurately control the battery state of charge (SOC) and state-of-health (SOH), as it can measure both system current and battery voltage.
Functionality
The BQ24311DSGR has 3 main functions: battery charging, system powering, and system protection.
Charging: The BQ24311DSGR enables safe charging of batteries by providing two charging modes - constant-voltage and constant-current. The device is pre-programmed with default charging parameters, which can be programmed externally. The constant-voltage (CV) mode is enabled by connecting a battery and an external power supply under open circuit conditions. The total charge current is controlled to a set maximum current. Under this condition, the battery voltage is monitored until it reaches a set point that is the maximum CV setting. The power supply is then disconnected and the charge current is maintained to charge the battery.
System Powering: The BQ24311DSGR device integrates the control logic to regulate the supply voltage for the system load. The controller is pre-programmed with the powering configuration which are used to calculate the appropriate outputs for the system load. The inputs from the system define how the BQ24311DSGR behaves, such as the power on conditions, initial voltage settings and maximum peak currents.
System Protection: The BQ24311DSGR comes with a dedicated set of protection features which helps in ensuring that the system is functioning within its defined limits. The device provides protection from several faults including overcharging, overloading, short-circuits, overheat, and so on. The device also boasts a low operating temperature, as it is designed to increase system reliability.
