Evaluation and demonstration boards and kits are essential tools for such activities as proof-of-concept evaluation, product evaluation, and system development. One such kit is the Texas Instruments BQ24230EVM.The EVM is designed to provide the system engineer a platform for evaluating such features and parts of the BQ24230 circuit as design efficiency, thermal performance, shoot-through protection, power-good, and hysteretic control.
The BQ24230EVM is an evaluation module (EVM) for the BQ24230 synchronous boost converter with integrated power FET. This device reduces system cost and simplifies design by combining the boost converter controller and the power stage into a single package for higher power density requirements. The BQ24230EVM requires an input of 4.5V to 14V, and can output a voltage up to 20V/3A. It is built with an on-board inductor, capacitors and other components, as well as a few test points and trimmers. It also comes equipped with USB power connections and a LED display for input power and output regulation.
The BQ24230EVM consists of two distinct blocks: the power stage block and the controller block. The power stage block includes the power components such as a boost switch, ripple filter, output diodes, COUT capacitors, and inductor L1. The boost switch is an internal for the BQ24230, and together with the controller it generates an output voltage up to 20V/3A. The inductor, L1, is included as a necessary component to store and release energy during switching. The COUT capacitors provide further filtering. The controller block consists of the BQ24230 and other peripheral components, including a Schottky diode and two bypass capacitors. The Schottky diode helps reduce inrush current at start-up and provides a path for energy transfer to the output when the switch turns off. The two bypass capacitors filter switching noise from the internal reference and charge pump. The EVM also provides the option of an external USB power switch, any/all of which can be switched off.
The device allows engineers to experiment with a range of parameters, providing flexible configuration options. The higher voltage and current output offers broader design flexibility. It also has protection features including over-voltage protection (OVP), under-voltage protection (UVP), overload protection (OLP), overtemperature protection (OTP), and short-circuit protection (SCP).
The BQ24230EVM provides the engineer with the opportunity to evaluate and better understand the operation of the BQ24230 synchronous boost converter. With all the added features of the EVM, such as USB power connections, LED displays for input power and output regulation, and external USB power switch, engineers can quickly and easily evaluate the performance capabilities of the device in system simulations. This evaluation module will provide crucial insights for the engineer interested in achieving maximum efficiency and power density within a limited space.
