The power stage block includes the power components such as a boost switch, ripple filter, output diodes, COUT capacitors, and inductor L1. The boost switch is an internal for the BQ24230, and together with the controller it generates an output voltage up to 20V/3A. The inductor, L1, is included as a necessary component to store and release energy during switching. The COUT capacitors provide further filtering. The controller block consists of the BQ24230 and other peripheral components, including a Schottky diode and two bypass capacitors. The Schottky diode helps reduce inrush current at start-up and provides a path for energy transfer to the output when the switch turns off. The two bypass capacitors filter switching noise from the internal reference and charge pump. The EVM also provides the option of an external USB power switch, any/all of which can be switched off.

The device allows engineers to experiment with a range of parameters, providing flexible configuration options. The higher voltage and current output offers broader design flexibility. It also has protection features including over-voltage protection (OVP), under-voltage protection (UVP), overload protection (OLP), overtemperature protection (OTP), and short-circuit protection (SCP).
