Evaluation and Demonstration Boards and Kits are designed to help customers prototype, debug, test, and develop with various products quickly and easily. The BQ34Z100EVM Evaluation Kit is a reference design platform for manufacturers and developers to evaluate, demonstrate, and develop applications using the BQ34Z100 Single-Cell Battery Gas Gauge IC. It is the ideal platform to quickly and efficiently develop portable products with a rechargeable battery such as wearables, smart phones, medical devices, and other portable consumer electronic devices.

The BQ34Z100EVM evaluation kit consists of two PCBs, an EVM board and a BQ34Z100 board. The EVM board is the main control board and provides system support, communication, and user interface for the BQ34Z100EVM kit. The EVM board has a Mini-B USB connector which is used to connect to a host PC for host device communication. The EVM board also includes an I2C serial interface for external device control and an LCD display for quick user interface with the BQ34Z100EVM kit. The BQ34Z100 board is a 4-layer board containing the BQ34Z100 IC, a P-FET ChargePort switch, and support components. The BQ34Z100EVM also contains a test board and accessories such as test cables, cables for hardwiring, and a test battery.

The BQ34Z100 gas gauge IC monitors battery voltage, temperature, and other parameters associated with the battery. The IC then calculates several state-of-charge characteristics: state-of-charge, remaining capacity, time-to-empty, time-to-full, and temperature. With the help of the BQ34Z100EVM board, these characteristics can be optimized and tuned for a variety of battery chemistries and cell configurations. Furthermore, the gas gauge IC allows for additional customization of the SOC and OROC thresholds for different applications. The BQ34Z100EVM also contains software which is used to configure the parameters of the IC itself, such as setting the ASY/SSY bits for custom algorithms.
