Working Principle

The BQ4842YMA-85 offers an integrated voltage detector for monitoring battery voltages and two selectable separate supply voltage inputs for superior flexibility. It contains a highly accurate (+/-0.7%) RC oscillator and temperature compensated oscillator (TCXO).

The chip includes a programmable, 8-bit rate selection circuit, a 256Kb non-volatile counter/timing application, an alarm generator and an I2C interface. This allows the user to set, maintain, and/or read the time, the count values and the alarm information with short instruction sequences or commands.

In order to make full use of the chip’s low-power mode, the device can be set to enter a low-power mode when not in use. This allows the device to continue to time accurately without consuming additional power. This also permits the chip to enter into very low-power mode for long-term battery applications.

The alarm feature can be used to enforce regular maintenance intervals, react to abnormal system behavior, or to simply announce appointment times. The alarm can be set with both a timer (date/time) and a counter, allowing flexibility in system design. When the alarm is triggered, an interrupt code is sent to the system.
