Working Principle of BQ4850YMA-85N

The BQ4850YMA-85N RTC is based on “MEMS resonator” technology, which is more advanced and accurate than the traditional quartz crystal. The embedded oscillator works in a frequency range of 32.768 kHz and converts it into a digital clock signal, which helps in precise timekeeping.

Power to the RTC is supplied using an external battery, and a backup circuit is used to provide power even in case of power interrupt. The external battery also safeguards the timekeeping functionality, even if the main power to the system is lost.

The RTC also has an alarm system, which mainly consists of a timer-counter with an alarm enable bit. When the timer-counter reaches the preset alarm time, it triggers an interrupt which can be used for applications like control the clock output and reset the system.

Apart from all the above-mentioned features, BQ4850YMA-85N also has several peripheral functions such as SPI serial interface, temperature sensing, and 32-bit counter to ensure accurate timekeeping.
