Input and output surge protection devices are commonly used in many electronic systems for protection against transient overvoltages on power and signal lines. The transient voltage suppressors (TVS) are an important class of surge protection components.

TVSs are mainly used to protect sensitive circuits from lightning SPDs, power transients on power lines, as well as from electrical overstress (EOS), electrostatic discharge (ESD), or EMI/RFI related surges.

Varistors, also known as voltage-dependent resistors (VDRs), are a kind of nonlinear electrical component that has a voltage-dependent resistance. Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) are a typical example of this kind of components. MOVs have a very good voltage-dependent characteristic and offer excellent protection against overvoltages.

The BSPM1690WE is an example of a type of MOVs designed to provide protection against transient overvoltages on power and signal lines. It offers overvoltage protection up to 16,000 Volts (V).

As with other types of Varistors, the BSPM1690WE is a low pass filter that attenuates high frequency noise and passes lower frequency signals. It also has an excellent voltage clamping function that helps to reduce transient overvoltages and protect sensitive components.

The BSPM1690WE also has a low current leakage and a high thermal stability, which makes it an ideal component for high-frequency applications. It is also able to operate in very high temperatures (up to 125°C).

In addition to its uses in surge protection, the BSPM1690WE also has applications in noise suppression, line energizing/decoupling, ESD protection, lightning protection, and line voltage regulation. It can also be used in DC-DC step-down/step-up converters, telecom systems, and data, audio & video I/O interfaces.

The BSPM1690WE is available in surface mount (SMD) and through-hole packages. Its working principle is based on the clamping function of the MOV. When an overvoltage is applied, the MOV will conduct and reduce the voltage very quickly. This helps to protect the components from electrical damage.
