The BSPM2275TNR is a general purpose 2.2 kilovolt surge protector which is implemented with bidirectional protection. The BSPM2275TNR Varistor is designed with a uniform distribution of two bimetallic plates which are connected together by a ceramic disc and a Prussian blue film. It has low inductance and nonlinear resistance characteristics, with a 2V clamping voltage and a maximum working current of 1.2A, over an operating frequency range from 10kHz to 10 MHz. Currently, the device is available in Industry Standard L offer packages with low VFS voltage ratings of 15pF, 16V, 22V, 24V, and 30V.

In operation, when an over voltage surge is applied, the bidirectional Varistor will conduct a limited amount of current through both plates before the fuse blows, liberating the non-linear resistance characteristic of the device. The high level of current will cause the Prussian blue film to fracturesacrificing itselfto create a saturated junction, and reduce the resistance across the bimetallic plates. This reduces the energy dissipated across the device from the over voltage surge and returns the circuit back to its operating voltage.

The Prussian blue film is designed to open sacrificial bridge between the two bimetallic plates to limit the current and protect the device from damage. In addition, the combination of the high energy absorbing Prussian blue film with the low inductance bimetallic plates enables the device to handle high surge current levels up to 10kA for 8/20uS.
