Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) devices are designed to protect sensitive electronic equipment from transient voltage events such as lightning, electrostatic discharge (ESD), and switching transients. There are two types: Varistors and Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs).

BSPM1400WE Working Principle

When the peak transient voltage exceeds the rating of the BSPM 1400WE, the MOV clamp the peak voltage to its nominal tracking voltage, which defines its maximum permissible sustained voltage. This voltage clamping behavior and how it occurs depends on the material’s positive temperature coefficient (PTC) and voltage breakdown characteristics. The BSPM1400WE is made of composite of a semiconductor layer with very low resistance and a ceramic layer with high electrical resistance. This combination is designed to withstand voltage up to 1400 Volts, pulse currents up to 64 kA (8/20µs), and transients up to 500A. When subjected to an excessive transient current or voltage, this MOV begins to conduct. The ceramic layer will become warmer as it quickly delivers the excess energy to the other elements. This is why the device has a positive temperature coefficient (PTC). This characteristic lowers the breakdown voltage as the temperature increases, leading to the point where the device breakdowns. Once the peak transient voltage exceeds the clamping voltage, the MOV will clamp the voltage and the current will start flowing through the device until the current is reduced to a normal level. When the level of current has been reduced to a safe level, the MOV will return to its original insulating state, and the breakdown voltage will be restored.
