However, when a surge occurs, the spark gap is ionized and current flows through the arrester under the action of the induced voltage. As the ionized spark gap causes a significant amount of current to flow, the temperature of the arrester increases. This high temperature causes the thermally-protected spark gap section to also open, thereby increasing the current-handling capability of the arrester.

In addition, this GDT is also equipped with a ceramic disk that helps to control the arrester\'s arc-over voltage. When the voltage across the GDT exceeds the predefined level, the ceramic disk helps to reduce the gap between the GDT\'s electrodes to provide additional protection against transient surges. Similarly, the ceramic disk also helps to regulate the arc-over voltage during high surge conditions to reduce the risk of excessive damage to sensitive electronic components.
