Thyristors - TRIACs

A triac, or triode for alternating current, is a generic term for a three-terminal electronic switch used for ac signals and devices. As such it resembles two thyristors connected in inverse parallel, but it is more complex than a simple thyristor, and in order to switch it off, a negative voltage trigger is needed, in contrast to the positive voltage needed to turn it on. This makes the triac an ideal switching device for applications such as motor speed control and light dimming.

BT137-800G0TQ is a series of asymmetric or bidirectional triacs. It was introduced by STMicroelectronics in 2008 and is used in a variety of applications such as AC motor speed control, automation and security systems, vending and gaming machines, robotics, industrial and consumer heating controls, power supplies and audio amplifiers.
