Thyristors, or silicon controlled rectifiers-SCRs, are unidirectional current switch devices which are used in large variety of applications to control electric power. Among these, one of the most common thyristor is the TRIAC (Triode for Alternating Current) due to its bidirectional switching capability. TRIACs are analogous to two SCRs connected in inverse parallel and share common gating circuits. TRIACs are normally used to switch AC power, but in some applications can also be used to switch DC power.

The BT138X-800,127 is an advanced three-quadrant silicon-controlled rectifier designed for controlling and protecting power circuits up to 800V,33A with better handling characteristics. This device consists of two thyristors, a gate and a common cathode with all three being connected in parallel. It is considered a four layer device (one p-region, one n-region and two n-region layers) that uses a voltage controlled AC switch. That is, it can be turned on and off by providing a ‘trigger’ voltage that exceeds the breakdown value. The device is built on a 4-pin package with two pins for anode and two pins for cathode connections.

A wide range of applications can be employed with this device such as AC lighting, heating and power control, UPS, motor control, etc. Even though the BT138X-800,127 TRIAC is commonly used in AC circuits, it can also be used in various applications involving DC pulses or pulses that involve both AC and pulsed DC components. A major application of the BT138X-800,127 is as a voltage or current control element for motor drives, universal motor load and generator controllers.

The TRIACs have their working principle based upon the Gunn effect. Gunn effect is the effect of electrons flowing from a heavy doped layer into the bulk material when a forward bias is applied. When a negative gate pulse is applied to the gated electrode, a negative gate current is induced to flow from the gate to the cathode which causes avalanche breakdown in the anode-cathode junction, making the TRIAC turn on and current starts flowing between cathode and anode in both directions.

Furthermore, the BT138X-800,127 TRIAC is able to control a bidirectional forward current, yielding a higher level of efficiency compared to SCRs, as it functions as a single switching device. Another advantage of this device is that it is able to withstand high transient voltages of up to 800V, making it ideal for usage in high-voltage applications.
