A Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR) is a type of thyristor, a three-terminal semiconductor device, specifically a four-layer device consisting of a PNPN layer structure that has two gates. Thyristors are switching devices that consist of a set of four layers of alternating P-type and N-type semiconductor materials enclosing a gate at the middle between the two layers. The two controlling gates, or base electrodes, of the thyristor allow current to flow through the device. When one gate electrode is positively biased and the other gate electrode is negatively biased, the thyristor will not switch states and the current will not flow through the device. In this way, the thyristor serves as a current controller.
