Thyristors - TRIACs
BTA316B-600B0J is a thyristor device that belongs to the TRIAC family. The device is a three terminal device which is used as a switch in AC power control applications. It acts by controlling the amount of leakage current to the gate of the TRIAC and the angle through which the main current flows.
Application Field and Working Principle
The BTA316B-600B0J is mainly used in applications such as light dimmers, motor speed controls, over-current/over-temperature protection and AC power controllers. When connected to a power source, the device allows a small amount of current to flow from the gate to the main current path. By controlling the amount of this leakage current, the point where the main current flows can be controlled. The angle of conduction is determined by the amount of the gate current, and the angle of conduction can be controlled by the magnitude of the control voltage applied to the gate.
The device is further used for AC power control applications, wherein the gate current can be varied using a voltage across two terminals to trigger and hold the conduction. The gate trigger current is comparatively very low. In terms of on-state voltage and gate trigger voltage, they are typically 4.5V and 4V respectively. The device is also very immune to false triggering due to its gate turn off capability.
In terms of the operational temperature range, the device is highly temperature tolerant and can largely withstand temperatures up to 100 degrees Celsius. The on-state current also remains constant at around 600mA and the thermal resistance is also very low when compared to similar devices.
The device is very versatile in its nature and it acts as a controllable switch and is perfectly capable of automated switching of AC power without the need for an external switch or a motor driven actuator. It can be used either in its forward or reverse directions for the application and the power consumption of the device is also very low.
