Working Principle

The TRIAC is essentially two Thyristors in parallel (one forward-conducting and the other reverse-conducting) sharing a common gate. The forward conducting Thyristor will turn the TRIAC on, allowing current to flow in the forward direction, and the reverse conducting Thyristor will turn the TRIAC on, allowing current to flow in the reverse direction. When the TRIAC is turned off, current will no longer flow in either direction.
