BZA968AVL 115 Application Field and Working Principle
TVS-diodes, also known as transient voltage suppressors (TVS) or transient voltage protectors (TVP), are designed to protect a circuit from harsh voltage changes. They are usually found in various applications such as automotive, consumer electronic, and industrial products. A TVS-diode is a specialized semiconductor device which can absorb, and essentially remove, excessive voltage before it reaches a sensitive device or circuit. BZA968AVL 115 is a surface mount unidirectional TVS diode which designed for transient overvoltage protection. It is a member of TRIPLECLAMP product family of Transient Voltage Suppressors and Uni-directional TVS devices from Littelfuse.This device is suitable for a wide variety of protection applications with ratings from 1.5 to 115 Volts. The TVS-diode consists of two terminals - an anode and a cathode. The external supply voltage across the anode and cathode will generate a junction potential across the two terminals, allowing current to flow through the device. When there is an overtemperature on the device, the internal impedance of the device will increase, limiting the current flowing through the diode. The BZA968AVL 115 is designed to offer surge protection from both the anode to the cathode and the cathode to the anode. The BZA968AVL 115 can be used to protect a wide variety of circuits including transistors, op amps, integrated circuits, data lines, automotive electronics, consumer electronics, telecom systems, instrumentation, and general electronic circuits. It is an ideal device to protect against overvoltage induced by lightning surges, ESD, EMF or other transients that could damage the circuit and pose safety hazards. The working principle of the BZA968AVL 115 is based on the P-N junction. When reverse polarity is applied to the P-N junction of the TVS-diode, the barrier potential is exceeded and the device starts to conduct current. As the voltage continues to climb, the junction reaches its breakdown voltage and enters into a region of avalanche breakdown, allowing for much higher amounts of current to flow. The device turns off once the voltage is removed, returning to its forward-biased state. The BZA968AVL 115 offers capability for peak pulse power dissipations up to 6.5 kilowatts at 10/1000µs pulse waveform. It has low capacitance and ensures users of excellent protection performance against high-energy transients. The operating temperature range is from -55°C to 125°C; and the material used for the fabrication is MSL-1 of JEDEC Standard.
