Diodes - Zener - Single
The BZD27C82P RTG is an 82V Zener diode, part of the large family of Zener diodes available in various voltage and current ratings that are used for voltage regulation, to protect an equipment from overvoltage transients or to allow for accurate voltage control in the form of a voltage reference. These devices are all based on the same fundamental design principe and working principle, which is a junction between two different types of semiconductor materials, limiting the flow of electric current in both directions until the voltage reaches the specified breakdown voltage.
The Zener diode is very similar in design to a regular diode, although also with a few critical differences. Both types of diodes consist of two semiconductor pieces joined together, with a p-type semiconductor material connected to a n-type material and a single depleted junction. However in the case of the Zener diode, the depleted junction is much larger and wider, and the semiconductor materials used have a much higher dopant level. This increased dopant level creates a thicker junction and increases the dopant concentration at the junction, which in turn increases the reverse behavior of the diode’s behavior. This reverse characteristic is what makes the Zener diode ideal for voltage regulation, capable of withstanding higher reverse voltages than a regular diode with little to no output change.
In normal operation, the Zener diode blocks current from passing through it, however when the applied voltage reaches a certain level set by its Zener voltage, defined as the breakdown voltage, the diode behavior changes. Once the voltage reaches the Zener voltage, the reverse breakdown effect occurs, and instead of blocking current it starts to conduct it. This enables the Zener diode to protect the device it is connected to, by clamping the voltage to the value of the breakdown voltage, in the case of BZD27C82P RTG, 82V ± 5%.
The Zener diode also has a few limitations, these including temperature coefficient, steady state current as well as dynamic impedance and power derating. This can limit its application in some scenarios, however due to its low cost and simple design, it is still one of the most popular solutions for voltage control and protection.
