TVS – Diodes are one of the most important protection products when it comes to ensuring the safety of electrical components in power and instrumentation systems. BZT03C12-TAP is one such device designed and manufactured by Littelfuse to protect any negative transient voltage generated due to an unexpected surge in current or voltage. This vertical TVS diode uses high temperature, planar silicon avalanche technology to protect the connected Circuitry from ESD, EFT and lightning induced transients.

The BZT03C12-TAP consists of two independent diodes in a Leadless Surface Mount Package (SMD). Each diode has a low standby current of 9 uA and a low capacitance of 5pF. Its capability to absorb repetitive ESD strikes or EFT induced transients further adds to the protection it provides. This device is also available with an integrated taps structure which can be used to easily terminate the connection between the Protected Circuitry and the External Return Line.

The working principle of the BZT03C12-TAP is relatively simple. It uses the principle of reverse breakdown voltage, which is a voltage at which the diode starts to conduct in the reverse direction in comparison to how it normally conducts. The maximum rating for the device is 12 Volts and it is capable of withstanding repetitive ESD strikes up to 12kV contact discharge. When a transient pulse is applied, the device starts conducting in the reverse direction and the current path is diverted to the external groove.

The application fields of the BZT03C12-TAP extend from Automobile Electronics, Computers, Consumer Electronics to Military & Aerospace products such as LCD & LED TV, HDD, Automotive Control Modules, Handset, Motherboards, Power Supplies, Security Systems and much more. The device has an operating temperature range of -55°C to 125°C.
