TVS – Diodes

TVS (Transient Voltage Suppression) diodes are fast acting solid-state devices which are designed to provide surge protection for sensitive electronics components from transient over-voltages. Transient over-voltage surges occur in industrial, commercial and automotive applications due to lightning strikes, power line faults, switching of inductive loads and contact between power line wires and ground. These transient surges are the main cause of power supply damage in Power Quality incidents and ESD (ElectroStatic Discharge) events. A properly designed TVS diode can protect components and circuit boards from the damaging energy associated with these surges and help to minimize equipment downtime and loss of production.

BZW04-11-E3/54 Application Field and Working Principle

The BZW04-11-E3/54 is a high-performance, bidirectional Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) diode designed for the protection of I/O and other ports on sensitive electronic systems. It is designed and tested to meet the stringent performance requirements of JEDEC standards JESD22-A114(B) and JESD22-A115(C). The BZW04-11-E3/54 is designed for applications such as phones, dongles, motherboards, networking cards, data/fax modems, battery chargers, adapter cards, cables/connectors, PBXs, consumer electronics, handheld devices, and automotive modules. The TVS diode is also suitable for use in general transient voltage suppression requirements.

The BZW04-11-E3/54 transient voltage suppression diode operates in one of two modes: clamping or absorption. When applied to a specified voltage the device becomes a diode zener in clamping mode, which produces a specified clamping voltage and absorbs a controlled amount of energy. In absorption mode, the device will react to repeated over-voltage transients by charging its internal capacitance, building up energy until it is discharged from the device through a reverse avalanche breakdown process. While in absorption mode, the BZW04-11-E3/54 will provide the highest levels of protection for sensitive components.

The unique design of the BZW04-11-E3/54 provides reliable protection from fast and powerful transients. It has a low leakage current and fast response time, and capable of effectively clamping and absorbing transient voltage pulses up to 28V. It is non-polar and symmetrical, with tight voltage tolerance (±10%), and wide temperature range of -55oC to + 125°C. The device also has a peak pulse current rating of 5A and an IEC surge rating of 8x20 microseconds from 0 - 55V.

The BZW04-11-E3/54 is a compact device with a footprint of 3mm x 5mm that can be surface-mounted onto a printed circuit board. The device has an anode and cathode and is considered a bidirectional diode, meaning it can protect against both positive and negative transient surges. It also has an internal parasitic capacitance of less than 4pF, thus limiting the high frequency noise transferred through the circuit. This feature helps to provide greater attenuation of conducted EMI, especially within networks, power supplies, and I/O ports.
