Working Principle

The BZW04-171B-E3/73 comprises of a pair of closely-matched bipolar transistors (BPTs) that act in tandem as a voltage clamp, providing protection against overvoltage transients. The two BPTs provide quasi-paralleled current paths for transient suppression, ensuring superior transient suppression over a wide voltage range. With a working voltage range of 5.5 – 36.0V, the device provides four stage voltage clamping at a breakdown voltage from 8.7V to 42.4V, depending on the peak surge current. The device is designed with low capacitance to protect input and output circuits against fast electrical transients.

The BZW04-171B-E3/73’s low capacitance of up to 0.16pF ensures excellent EMI suppression, with a low leakage of up to 2µA even at +25°C. The device is also designed to meet the requirements of the new IEC 61000-4-2 test level 4, providing reliable protection against electrostatic discharge (ESD). The device also features an internal bypass diode, which helps to limit the transient voltage seen by the load.

The BZW04-171B-E3/73 provides low capacitance ESD protection while maintaining high MCV levels and low protection thresholds. It also features low leakage current and high surge capability, making it ideal for use in a range of applications.
