The BZW04-17-E3/54 TVS – Diode is a low voltage transient suppression device designed to protect sensitive electronic components from transient overvoltage damage and ESD events. The device utilises a combination of low-voltage avalanche breakdown technology, advanced voltage clamping, and low capacitance to provide effective protection in a low voltage, low capacitance surface mount package.

The BZW04-17-E3/54 series are general purpose transient voltage surge suppressors used in multiple automotive and industrial applications. The device can be used to protect ac and dc power lines, data and control lines, high-speed logic signal lines, and other sensitive low-voltage components from transient overvoltage damage. The protected circuit is maintained at a safe operating voltage level until the transient event has ended. The surge protection also applies to ESD pulses, preventing static discharges damaging sensitive electronics.

The typical maximum stand-off voltage of the BZW04-17-E3/54 devices is 17V, and the breakdown voltage is 18V. It has a low clamping voltage of 28V. The maximum reverse leakage current is 1μA and the maximum instantaneous peak current rating is 5A @1.2/50us. The low capacitance of this device is 0.7pF, which makes it ideal for high-speed signal lines.

The working principle of the BZW04-17-E3/54 transient voltage surge suppressor is based on the avalanche breakdown effect. When an overvoltage transient is applied across the diode junction, the reverse voltage of the diode junction increases linearly. When the avalanche breakdown voltage is reached, a heavy current flows through the junction, significantly reducing the voltage across the junction. This breakdown voltage is determined by the doping profile and junction area of the diode and depends on the semi-conductor material used.

The avalanche voltage breakdown is ensured by the heavily doped region of the device, while the voltage clamping is ensured by the low voltage region of the device. The high current capability of the device allows it to absorb the energy from high power surges and divert it away from the protected circuit. The low capacitance of the device, combined with the fast response time, ensures that this device can effectively protect high-speed logic signal lines from transient overvoltages.

The BZW04-17-E3/54 series can be used for the protection of ac and dc power lines, data and control lines, and high-speed logic signal lines. It can also be used to protect sensitive electronics from ESD pulses. The device has a low-voltage avalanche breakdown, advanced voltage clamping, and low capacitance, which make it an ideal device for a multitude of automotive and industrial applications.
