TVS - Diodes, which are also known as transient voltage suppression diodes, are fast-acting, controlled rectifiers or power thyristors used to protect a circuit from high-voltage transients. These devices clamp the voltage at a predetermined level and thus prevent the high-voltage transient from propagating on to the unprotected devices. They are mainly used in telecommunications, automotive, process control, medical and industrial applications.

BZW06-28 is a typical type of TVS - Diode which is a high power bidirectional transient voltage surge suppressor. The retainer is made of pressure contact plastic and has a broad-based para-type configuration. The schottky barrier diodes (SBD) used is designed to provide excellent clamping performance for high current transients. The special electric scheme and the optimized high temperature solder process enable it to ensure reliable operation and great ESD immunity.

The applicable fields of BZW06-28 include mobile handsets, IC, logic, power supplies, and networking equipment. Its working principle is based on the principle of a Zener diode, clamping the voltages between 20V and 28V. In normal condition, the current through terminal A and terminal K is zero. When a high voltage surge is applied between terminal A and terminal K, the output voltage will be limited to a given maximum voltage. When the surge voltage reaches the breakdown voltage of the diode, the current will flow through the diode and make the voltage limit to the breakdown voltage. In other words, BZW06-28 will conduct in the forward direction (normal state) until the surge voltage reaches the breakdown voltage.

The typical application circuit for BZW06-28 is shown as follows:

As indicated in the figure, there are two terminals connected to a power supply which is powered by a low-voltage source such as 8V or 10V. The protection diode, which is represented by BZW06-28, provides a path for the surge current to bypass the circuit. When the voltage between terminal A and terminal K reaches 28V, the clamp voltage of the diode, the current flowing in the BZW06-28 will equal the peak current of the surge. The BZW06-28 will conduct the surge current between A and K, thus protecting the downstream components from voltage surge.

In conclusion, BZW06-28 is a high-power bidirectional transient voltage surge suppressor device designed for mobile phones, IC, Logic, power supply and network devices, etc. Operating on the principle of a Zener diode, it provides voltage clamping between 20V and 28V, and thus helps protect the components from voltage surge.
