CD14538BNSR is a dual monostable multivibrator designed for digital applications such as interval timers and event counters, phase shift circuits and pulse width modulators. It consists of two Schmitt triggers with complementary outputs, designed to provide good noise immunity and static characteristics over a wide range of temperatures and power supply voltages.
A multivibrator is an electronic circuit used to implement a variety of different cyclical electronic functions. It is commonly used in logic circuits and has two stable states which can be used to control other logic circuits. These two stable states are referred to as “set” and “reset”. A typical application is a counter which counts the number of times it enters a “set” state or a “reset” state, which can then be used to increment or decrement a value stored in a register.
The CD14538BNSR takes advantage of this property to create an interval timer circuit by using an external clock or timing signal to control its two outputs. The first output is locked in its set state until the clock signal is applied. Once the clock signal is applied, the output changes to the reset state for a short period of time. The second output works in the opposite manner. It is held in its reset state until the clock signal is applied. When the clock signal is applied, the output changes to the set state for a short period of time, determined by the external RC time constant. This output provides the reset condition for the first output, allowing for the timer to be reset.
